What’s funnier than a Marx Brothers film? Four Marx Brothers films! Allen Public Library presents our May movie series with four of the funniest, most madcap films with Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo (appearing in all but the last film).
On Tuesday night, May 5, we will show Animal Crackers (1930), one of the earliest Marx Brothers comedies. Groucho Marx plays Captain Spaulding a well-known explorer. Spaulding and his wacky friends (who else?) try to solve the mystery of a painting stolen from the home of a high-society matron during a gala celebration. Watch for the funniest card game ever!
The next movie on Tuesday, May 12, is Horse Feathers (1932). This time Groucho plays a hip college professor, Professor Quincy Adams Wagstaff, and Harpo and Chico are football players that the professor recruits from a speakeasy based on his son Frank’s influence. The professor believes he is hiring two professional players, but Harpo and Chico’s idea of a great football game includes banana peels and a chariot. Unfortunately, the professor who signed the boys to play is totally unaware of his mistake!
Our next film, on Tuesday, May 19, is Duck Soup (1933). A wealthy woman, Mrs. Teasdale, decides to rescue the small bankrupt country of Freedonia by donating twenty million dollars to the country. But there’s a catch. Mrs. Teasdale insists that Freedonia must elect the crazy dictator Rufus T. Firefly as the new president. Then when the ambassador of a neighboring country makes a play for Mrs. Teasdale, President Firefly declares war and chaos ensues!
Our final Marx Brothers film, A Night at the Opera (1935), on Tuesday, May 26, finds the brothers taking on high society and the opera. A European opera star is chasing his leading lady, but his leading lady has eyes (and ears) only for Ricardo, an unknown tenor, with more talent than the insufferable star. On a ship bound for New York, Ricardo and friends (who else but the brothers) including his manager and a former dresser for Lassparri, the opera star, stowaway in order to reunite Ricardo with his lady love, Rosa. The high jinx that start onboard ship continue on stage as the brothers try to make Ricardo’s dream come true.
All films are shown starting at 7 p.m. in the civic auditorium. A big screen, surround sound and lots of laughs…what could be better! Call 214.509.4905 for more information.
