Girls on the Run is an after school program that uses the power of running and discussing important issues to focus of building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health for 3rd – 5th grade girls. The girls meet twice a week for 12 weeks with trained coaches who teach specific lesson topics such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions and contributing to the community. The running is built into games and activities that focus on the topic being discussed and along the way, they train together and build their physical endurance to participate in a 5K with their classmates at the end of the season.
Girls on the Run was established by Molly Barker, a four-time Hawaii Ironman triathlete. She holds a Master’s in social work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a former high school teacher and track coach. Ms. Barker also worked as a college counselor addressing the needs of women with eating disorders, alcohol and substance abuse problems and depression. The program was established to celebrate the gifts of girlhood and to address what she calls Girl-Box issues. The "Girl Box" is a place where girls are valued more for their outward appearance than their character inside. This often results in low self-esteem and a distorted body image.
Girls on the Run of the DFW Metroplex is one of many programs across the country with the mission to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living. The curriculum encompasses three concepts in 12 weeks:
All about Me: Getting to know who I am and what I stand for.
Building My Team: Understanding the importance of cooperation.
Community Begins with Me: Learning about community and designing our own community project
In the spring of 2009 classes will be held at the Joe Farmer Recreation Center and Celebration Park. These classes will join classes across the Metroplex in the Girls on the Run 5K to celebrate their accomplishments.
Girls on the Run is currently looking for coaches for the spring season in Allen. Coaches need not be accomplished athletes but enthusiastic and committed to the healthy development of young girls. All training, supplies and curriculum are provided to coaches. This is the opportunity to pass on to young girls the lessons "we wish we had known" or lessons learned on the journey to a healthy adult woman. To learn more about coaching visit the website at www.gotrdfw.org or call Janette Steinheimer at 972-849-4668. |
