  • Allen resident and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children patient, Payal Modi, 18, presented her award-winning piece of artwork, "Fixed", to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lori Karol, M.D. Payal had spinal implant surgery performed by Dr. Karol at TSRHC to correct her scoliosis, a severe curvature of the spine, when she was fifteen.

Her artwork abstractly reflects her surgical process and subsequent healing. The vertebrae in her artwork are portrayed as blocks of wood and the spinal implants are represented through wires that hold the blocks in place. The gradation of red colored blocks is symbolic of the post operation progression of strength and confidence. Payal was awarded first place and a $600 scholarship by the Texas Visual Arts Association for her work.
