As spring officially gets under way, join in the celebration by participating in the Presbyterian Hospital of Allen 2008 SpringFest 5K FunRun and 1 Mile Walk hosted by the City of Allen and the Allen Independent School District, benefiting Allen Community Outreach. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, May 3. Walkers, joggers, and serious runners of all ages can participate in the fun as ACO will host a sanctioned 5K race, preceded by the Fourth Annual Martha Janes Memorial 1 Mile FunRun and Walk.
The Martha Janes Memorial 1 Mile FunRun and Walk is named after the long-time resident and veteran participant in this event. Ms. Janes, who was a Meals-On-Wheels recipient, would train for weeks, with herwalker, and looked forward each year to participating in this event. She passed away in 2004, but her family carries on the tradition and the "Janes Gang" will be well-represented again this year.
This year’s race will truly be a family affair featuring enter¬tainment for the kids, vendors and a live band. The race will be held in the area around the Heritage Center train depot in downtown Allen. Runners will start on Main Street, wind their way along scenic neighborhood streets, race through Celebration Park, and finish at the same Start/Finish line on Main Street.
The schedule of events includes registration from 7-8 a.m. in the depot. The Martha Janes Memorial 1 Mile FunRun and Walk and Special Olympics race will begin at 8 a.m. and the featured 5K Race (over a certified course) begins at 8:30 a.m. Medals will be awarded in each category at the conclusion of the 5K race.
Entry fee for adults is $15 in advance and $20 on race day. Seniors (62+) and children under 12 can participate for $10 in advance and $15 on race day. Event T-shirts will be available, but sizes can’t be guaranteed.
The Presbyterian Hospital of Allen 2008 SpringFest benefits programs at Allen Community Outreach including Meals-on-Wheels & More. This program helps provide more than 1000 meals a month to area seniors and shut-ins who cannot shop and cook for themselves. The "More" part of this program includes those under the age of 60 who are unable to prepare a hot meal at home. Each weekday a MOW volunteer will visit the shut-ins with a hot, nutritious meal and a smile. Your participation will help support this program.
Please note there has been a change in registration this year. Advance registration can be found online at www.acocares.org or www.runontexas.com. Packets can be picked up at Run On! at 1469 W. Campbell Rd. in Richardson or 5180 Eldorado #200 in McKinney from April 30-May 2,10 a.m.-7 p.m. or on race day. There is no packet pickup at the ACO office this year. If you would like to be involved, there are also many volunteer opportunities available. Contact Lynn Burdick at 972-727-9131 or Lynn@acocares.org for more information.
